Pregnancy Discomfort

What causes back pain during pregnancy?

Back pain during pregnancy is very common and can be easily attributed to the way a woman’s body rapidly changes during those crucial nine months. Here are a few ways in which pregnancy can affect your body:

  • As the fetus grows and expands outward so does the mother’s center of gravity; this forward shift makes for extra strain on the supporting structures of the lower back vertebrae and the pelvis.
  • During pregnancy a hormone called “relaxin” is released into the mother’s body, allowing for easier bone movement during birth; however, this can mean that the bones in the spinal column and pelvis may be moving easier at other times, making for tense painful muscles and pinched nerves.
  • If there are misaligned bones in the mother’s body during labor it can cause pain during delivery, extended labor, and poor positioning of the baby before delivery.

Pregnancy can be an uncomfortable experience, so there may not be a clear-cut clue as to where pain or discomfort may be coming from. Here is a list of a few of the treatable symptoms that can manifest from pregnancy:

  • Low back pain
  • Leg pain
  • Numbness and tingling in feet
  • Mid-back pain
