Maintain Good Posture

Posture

One of the most common reasons for health problems that I see in my office is faulty posture. Having poor posture will almost guarantee that you’ll have Chiropractic structural problems. But luckily, if you get proper chiropractic spinal & extremity adjustments and are put on a postural rehabilitation program, postural faults will not plague you.
What constitutes good posture?

If you drop a line down from your head to your feet it should pass directly through the following:

Ear canal

Shoulder joint

Hip joint

Knee joint

Ankle joint

Effects of poor posture

The immediate effect of having poor posture is that you’ll start to develop abnormal pains in your body. These are pains that you have no idea why they’re there. You’ll begin to notice that you’ll have upper neck, back and low back pain. You may even develop foot, knee and hip pain.
How do you correct poor posture?

Step 1: Make sure that you are analyzed by a competent Chiropractic physician (preferably one who focuses on postural alignment).

Step 2: Remove structural interferences in all affected joints. As Chiropractors, we term these interferences “subluxations.” These subluxations interfere with your joint’s normal motion and restricted motion is the first step toward postural distortions.

Step 3: Focus on retraining the surrounding stabilizing muscles. This is most important to a lasting postural correction. Along with making sure the surrounding muscles are “firing at optimal” your chiropractor should then make sure all the surrounding muscles move together in a synchronous pattern. When the muscles move synchronously you decrease the wear and tear on the joint.

Step 4: Focus on general postural enhancing exercises. There are specific exercises that will help you to regain proper posture. Some include: chin-tuck, doorway stretches, abdominal bracing and pelvic rocking.

Chronic Migraines Helped by Chiropractic, Study Shows

A study published in the February 2000 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, (JMPT), showed that people suffering with migraine headaches were helped with chiropractic care. The study was conducted in Australia at the Chiropractic Research Center of Macquarie University. In this research 177 volunteers were studied who had migraine headaches for over 18 years on average. Many of the participants also suffered from neck pain.
The average response of the group that received chiropractic care showed a statistically significant improvement in migraine frequency, duration, and disability. The study also showed that those who received chiropractic care were able to reduce their medication use, with a significant number reducing their medication usage to zero! Additionally, 59% had no neck pain after a period of two months, and another 35% had a decrease in neck pain.

The researchers concluded this study, built on previous studies that had similar results. “There have now been several studies demonstrating significant improvement in headaches or migraines after chiropractic.” The Migraine Foundation of Australia estimates that some 12% of Australians ages 15 and over, experience migraines.

Stretch and Strengthen

Dec 12

Both flexibility training and strength training are necessary to achieve overall fitness. As a matter of fact, one of the best times to stretch is right after a resistance exercise. Static stretching of pre-fatigued muscles, done immediately after the movement that created the fatigue, increases the effectiveness of the stretch. A fatigued muscle is inhibited from contracting as hard, and thus limiting the stretch reflex. This allows an even further elongation of the muscle and surrounding tissue than would have been possible without the muscle being in a state of pre-fatigue. Immediately stretching a muscle after intense exercise also promotes muscular growth and reduces post workout soreness. Stretching hastens the delivery oxygen and other nutrients, and while speeding up the removal of lactic acid, and other waste products.

Stretching Guidelines

  • The flexibility segment of your program should be done when the body is warm, preferably at the end of your workout.
  • Once the body is warmed up, stretching exercises can be intermixed with strength moves to save time.
  • Stretches should be held from 15 to 30 seconds. A sum total of at least 30 seconds is recommended to achieve any kind of permanent stretch, regardless of the number of sets performed.
  • Breathe out when going into the stretch, and inhale when coming out of it. Use the breath as a way to relax, and go further into the movement.
  • NEVER stretch to a point of feeling pain, only slight discomfort.
  • Unlike aerobic and strength training, stretching can be repeated every day.

Auto accident injuries

Dec 12

Almost all Americans will be involved in at least one motor vehicle accident at some time in their life. Often we are able to walk away free of injury…or so we may think. Learn about the little noticed symptoms that can result in permanent pain and discomfort if not treated properly.

Injuries that result from a motor vehicle accident are often misunderstood. Frequently, the pain or other symptoms of the injury are not apparent at the time of the accident. In fact, some injuries are hidden so well they may be missed by emergency room technicians and can take weeks, months, and even years, months, and even years before actual symptoms show.

The amount of damage to the car does not depict the amount of injury sustained by the victim. Studies indicate that injuries can occur at impact speeds of 8 mph where there is little or even no damage to the car. Today’s cars absorb much of the impact in the bumper, but transmit this energy from impact to the person’s head and neck in much the same fashion as when one pool ball hits another.

The most common symptoms of a whiplash injury are pain or stiffness in the neck and shoulders, recurring headaches, numbness in the arms and fingers, irritability, a back pain, and dizziness.

Few people realize that an untreated neck or back injury from a car accident is likely to develop into arthritis in later years adding more pain and debilitation to the situation.

Adjust your chair properly. Here’s how:
Stand in front of your chair and adjust the seat so that its highest point is just below your knee cap. Sit so that there is large enough space to fit a clenched fist between the front edge of the seat and the lower part of the legs. Ensure that the back rest supports the hollow of your lower back. Adjust the height of your chair so that your work surface is at elbow height when you are seated; determine elbow height by holding your arms straight down at your sides. Use a foot rest if, after adjusting the seat to the proper height, your feet still are not resting flat on the floor.
